Introducing autoWSI - Flexible Motorized Whole Slide Scanning
Microvisioneer is pleased to introduce autoWSI, our software solution for motorized whole slide imaging using configurable microscope-based systems.
autoWSI controls the motorized X, Y, and Z-axes for automated image acquisition and stitching. The software supports scanning at different magnifications, low-magnification preview scans, autofocus and automated focus mapping. This enables efficient digitization of research samples, including larger scan areas and high-magnificatin applications.
A Modular Approach to Motorized Slide Scanning
Rather than relying on a fixed scanner configuration, autoWSI combines scanning software with suitable microscope hardware, a motorized stage and a camera. Systems can be configured around an existing microscope or assembled using newly selected components.
This modular approach makes it possible to take advantage of the optical flexibility of a microscope, including specialized contrast methods, high-magnification objectives and different sample formats.
It can also provide a cost-efficient alternative to dedicated high-end scanning systems, particularly for specialized research applications where conventional slide scanners do not offer the required imaging capabilities.

Designed for Specialized Research Applications
autoWSI is particularly suitable for applications that benefit from flexible microscope configurations and automated scanning, including:
Geology, geoarchaeology and petrographic materials
Digitization of thin sections and mineral-based samples, includig polarized light scanning
Histological research with special contrasts
Automated scanning with specialized contrast methods, such as polarized light imaging of Picrosirius Red-stained tissue sections
High-magnification and oil immersion scanning
Motorized image acquisition for high-resolution imaging, including oil immersion scanning
Large research sections
Automated scanning of extended tissue areas, with configurations also available for non-standard slide formats

Our new autoWSI product page provides an overview of the software, its capabilities and application examples.
A demonstration video shows the automated scanning workflow using an orangutan brain section. After creating a low-magnification preview image, a region of interest and focus points are defined. autoWSI then uses its autofocus algorithm to determine the optimal focus positions and generate a Focus Map, which controls the Z-position during automated image acquisition and stitching.
Explore autoWSI and watch the demonstration video on our new product page.
